Authorities in Shanghai and Guangzhou have denied online reports claiming a new C7 license would allow drivers to operate four-wheeled low-speed electric vehicles, or “laotou le,” and that pilot programs would start this year with a nationwide rollout next year. “Laotou le” are small, four-wheeled low-speed electric vehicles commonly used by elderly drivers in China. Investigations found the reports largely originated from driving schools and low-speed EV marketing accounts and contained false information. While the China Passenger Car Association has suggested easier license procedures for middle-aged and elderly drivers, the initiative is not specific to low-speed EVs. Currently, regulations on low-speed electric vehicles vary across regions, and experts recommend establishing unified national standards. [IThome, in Chinese]
