Open-ear headphones brand Shokz has revealed a new clip-on earbuds model that will go head-to-head with Bose Ultra Open audio accessory.

The new OpenDots One model has a U-shaped design that clamps to the back of the ear, while retaining all of the advantages of open earbuds, according to the company.

The speaker still rests outside the ear canal, so you’ll still be able to chat to people, hear your surroundings and feel safe, Shokz says. They also carry the advantage of preventing wax build-up, are more hygenic, and guard against eardrum damage.

The clamp-on design is also mighty secure, according to the company, and the buds are also interchangeable meaning there’s no real specific left and right bud. You can stick the buds in either ear and the Dynamic Ear Detection Technology will figure it out.

“Enjoy stability, durability, and comfort with OpenDots ONE. Combining a nickel-titanium plate with a soft silicone grip, these earbuds will stay securely in place through even your most intense workouts, allowing you to enjoy all-day comfort with no distractions,” Shokz says in a blog post today.

Despite the open design Shokz says the OpenDots One guards against polluting the environment around you, using DirectPitch Technology to ensure minimal sound leakage.

Audio wise, there’s support for Dolby Audio, four pre-set EQ modes, and plenty of bass packed in from a pair of drivers. You’ll get 10 hours of battery life and a total of 40 hours with the charging case that, itself, can be charged wirelessly. One hour in that case will fully replenish the buds. The buds are IP54 sweatproof and they weight just 6.5g each.

The OpenDots One are available to buy now for $199. That’s $100 cheaper than Bose model launched at. The UK price and availability is yet to be confirmed.

Opinion

We’re used to the excellent bone conducting headphones from Shokz that are beloved by runners. Can they company continue the hot streak with the OpenDots One model that undercut the price of the main rival in Bose?
