He was best known for writing music that appeared in the movie The Amazing Spider Man 2.
The song Gone Gone Gone reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, per The Hollywood Reporter.
He received an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers award for the track.
But before Fuhrmann was writing music for films such as The Amazing Spider Man 2, he was part of the band Omnisoul, later known as The Crash Motive.
Fuhrmann was one fifth of the band and its members met while they were students at the University of Delaware.
“Derek was many things to us,” they posted on social media.
“We remember him as gentle, patient, caring, loving, and someone who stood up for what was right.
“He was a gifted musician and a prolific songwriter who poured his heart into everything he created.”
The band disbanded in 2008 but reunited last year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of recording its first album.
Ominsoul has led the tributes to Fuhrmann.
“None of us expected it would be the last time we’d share a stage with him,” they said.
“We hold on to the memories, the lessons, and the wild ride we were lucky enough to take together.
“There was no better way to spend our twenties than chasing that dream with Derek by our side.”
Fuhrmann was married to doting wife Mackenzie and she described her late husband as her “best friend.”
She hailed his parenting skills and labeled him his “everything.”
“I feel so lucky to have had him but so sad our time was cut so short,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Our love was bigger than most and full of so many laughs.
“Derek never went a day without telling me or our boys how much he loved us.
“Watching him be a dad has forever changed me. He was so proud of our family.”
In a separate post, she shared a video of Fuhrmann playing a guitar while on vacation.
Weeks before his death, Mackenzie welcomed baby Boone River Fuhrmann into the world.
“Just in time for Mothers Day,” she posted.
“5lb 12 ounces of delicious magic. Our hearts are so full.”
