Smart People Are Stuck in Mental Poverty | HackerNoon

Congratulations. You’ve just walked into the only place on the internet where smart people finally get told the truth:

Your brain is elite. Your life… isn’t matching it yet.

Let’s fix that.

1. The Trap: You don’t think too much; you stimulate too much.

High-IQ brains have a gift that becomes a curse: You can imagine 10,000 possibilities in 0.2 seconds. The problem is that your brain treats imagined danger like real danger.

Enter the DMN: Default Mode Network: n This is your internal movie studio. It predicts, simulates, catastrophizes, over-analyzes, and then congratulates itself for “being careful.”

You call it being smart. n Your nervous system calls it war.

Meanwhile, life is happening in the DEN: Direct Experience Network, where decisions are made with sensory data, not spirals.

And DEN people (the ones you secretly think are “dumber”)?

Yeah. They’re lapping you. Because they’re not trapped in a mental IMAX theater running apocalypse trailers 24/7.

2. How high-IQ people become poor.. mentally.

Just to be clear.. This isn’t about money. It’s about the poverty of lived experience. High-IQ people suffer from lack of contact with reality.

You spend so much time inside your mind that the outside world becomes… theoretical. n A place you visit occasionally, like a distant relative. You don’t live there, you just observe it, analyze it, rehearse it.

And here’s the trap nobody warns you about: You start believing the simulation is the experience.

So instead of taking the first step, you calculate 200 possible outcomes. Instead of sending the message, you rehearse how it might be interpreted. Instead of trying, failing, adjusting, you prepare, over-prepare, and then prepare some more… just to avoid the discomfort of reality touching your skin.

You convince yourself you’re being “smart.” n But what you’re really doing is living a high-resolution version of nothing.

The result?

  • You build entire universes in your mind while your real life gathers dust.
  • You become a world-class expert at imagining danger, and a complete amateur at living.
  • You know 50 ways it could go wrong…and zero ways it might go right, because you never actually went.

At some point, you look around and realize: Your intelligence has taken you everywhere except where you actually want to be.

That’s mental poverty.

3. Your Brain is Misused.

Think of your mind like a scalpel.

Perfect for precision. n Terrible for digging holes.

Your DMN was made for creativity, strategy, pattern detection. n But when you use it forliving? n It slices you apart.

The goal isn’t to “stop overthinking.” That’s impossible.

The goal is getting out of the DMN and into the DEN on command: a skill that almost no one teaches but every high performer masters.

The moment you activate DEN, something wild happens:

  • Anxiety quiets
  • Time slows
  • Action feels obvious
  • Reality becomes simple
  • Confidence kicks in because it’s tied to movement, not theory

This is why “less intelligent” people often win:

They are in the DEN more often, while you (the genius) are running a supercomputer on the wrong software.

4. The Shift: What you can do today.

Here’s the part nobody tells you: escaping mental poverty isn’t about “trying harder.” It’s about interrupting the brain pattern that’s been silently running your life like a corrupt operating system.

So here’s what actually works:

1. Collapse the mental movie.

Your brain loves building 40-minute documentaries about things that haven’t happened.

Cut the runtime. n When your mind starts producing season three of *“What If Everything Goes Wrong,”*interrupt it with something simple:

“What’s the next physical action?”

Not the whole plan. n Not the five-year vision board. n Just the nextmotion that touches the real world.

High-IQ minds hate this because it kills the simulation, but that’s the point.

2. Force contact with reality.

Overthinkers fear feedback. Reality gives you information your imagination can’t control, and that terrifies you. So pick one thing today that your brain has been negotiating with for weeks… and touch it.

Not think about it. n Not journal about it. n Not “prepare” for it.

**Touch it. Send the message. n Press publish. n Walk into the room. n Ask the uncomfortable question.

Reality is the antidote to mental poverty.

The real shift

You don’t fix overthinking by becoming braver. You fix it by becoming less available to your own mental bullshit.

The moment you realize your brain is simulating instead of living, you break the trance.

And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

5. The Truth (The part most people can’t handle)

The therapist in the story was right:

“Your mind is so powerful it talks you out of the life you’re meant to live.”

Smart people don’t fail because of weakness. They fail because of untamed intelligence.

This newsletter, and the manuscript many of you downloaded exists for one reason:

  • To teach high-IQ people how to stop living in mental poverty and start living in reality.
  • Where life actually happens.
  • Where results stack.
  • Where confidence grows.
  • Where potential becomes performance.

You’re in the right place.

And we’re just getting started.

Strategizingly yours,

Benoit
