It’s been a couple of years since Snapchat made the shift to 3D avatars. The company said at the time that it gave users more ways than ever to represent themselves. Two years later, the complaints kept coming, so following a petition 2D avatars are now being reintroduced …
Snapchat switched from 2D to 3D Bitmoji back in 2023, and it wasn’t long before users started complaining. One of them even went as far as starting an online petition to bring back the original 2D comic characters.
Snapchat has made a huge and HORRIBLE update on the bitmojis. the legs and arms dont add up, the torsos look square, and the facial features just look ugly and weird. the old snapchat characters were much cuter (all feminine non binary and masculine users).
The company has now responded.
In 2023, we launched a new 3D avatar across Snapchat, unlocking the most customizable features yet, from diverse body types and hairstyles to richer details like makeup, and freckles. These upgrades gave Snapchatters more ways than ever to represent themselves.
But we also know that many in our community feel a deep affinity for their original Avatar, and are nostalgic for the 2D Comic style. In fact, thousands of Snapchatters even petitioned us to bring it back. We listened.
Over the coming days, Snapchat+ subscribers will be able to turn on Comic Bitmoji — a new style that brings back the charm of classic avatars, while keeping all the benefits of today’s 3D infrastructure. Think of it like a filter for your avatar: the same customization and expressions you love, reimagined to be reminiscent of that iconic comic-inspired look. This setting will allow subscribers to see all Bitmoji avatars in their app in 2D, and send Stickers to their friends that reflect their selected style.
Time for a petition on the macOS 26 Tahoe icons … ? Some 60% of our readers are unimpressed.
