The group SoftBank is negotiating the purchase of ampere computing. According to Bloomberg, negotiations are already very advanced, and to fruit, Ampere’s assessmentwhich has Oracle’s support, It would reach 6,500 million of dollars. If the operation comes to fruition, it can be announced in the coming weeks.
Some time ago rumors began to emerge that ARM, whose main owner is Softbank, was interested in becoming ampere. This has caused SoftBank to have shown their interest in the company, with which they have apparently negotiating several weeks.
But it does not seem that Softbank is the only one interested in taking control of Ampere, since one of its shareholders, Oracle, may increase its participation in the company until it is its main shareholder. Last year Oracle already controlled 29% ampere, and in fact can exercise options on future investments in it.
The company is dedicated to the design of processors for data centers using ARM technology. In 2021, when Softbank made a proposal to invest in it and become a minority shareholder, it was valued at about 8,000 million dollars. But the chips market has changed a lot since then, increasing its competitiveness, and several of the great technological ones want to develop the same types of product that it manufactures ampere, which has adjusted the value of the companies in the sector.
To this, it is necessary that companies traditionally dedicated to chips development are making quite conservative predictions in the short term, mainly because the investment in computing prepared for AI is braking. ARM is one of the companies that has sounded prudent in its predictions for this quarter and futures while AMD’s, directly, have been quite discouraging.
All for the Deepseek’s emergencewhich has raised Doubts about the growth in the future of the hardware sector for AI Because of its less resource consumption, as well as production costs much lower than those of other models so far.
