Several Cybertruck owners claim their pickups are dead after installing software 2024.45.25.5

- A recent software update has rendered several Cybertrucks unusable.
- Tesla recently launched its new HW4 on-board computer, which also causes problems.
- The service centers have reportedly been instructed to downplay owners’ concerns.
Numerous Tesla Cybertruck owners say their electric vehicles are breaking down after installing a recent software update, and several others are experiencing problems with the brand’s new HW4 onboard computer. The problems have left owners of several Tesla models stranded and forced the automaker’s technicians to reset their vehicles.
News of trouble first started to emerge last week. It is clear that vehicles with the new HW4 computer are short circuiting, possibly during the camera calibration process. The issue affects vehicles such as the Model 3 and Model Y and disables important features such as GPS, navigation, range estimates and cameras.

While these issues are happening, several Cybertruck owners are claiming that their pickups are getting bricked after installing software 2024.45.25.5, although it is unclear if the same computer glitch caused these errors. Several members of the Cybertruck Owners Club forum are reporting that their trucks have become crippled during a software update.
In one case, a Tesla technician says they “found firmware that was hammered mid-install for an unknown reason,” and that a “partial update disabled the vehicle.” Once the software was successfully reinstalled, the truck was confirmed to be operational.
It seems that problems directly related to the HW4 computer are becoming more common. Electrek says it has been contacted by numerous owners experiencing issues with the new computer that has been rolled out in recent months. This new computer reportedly has less RAM and storage than the HW3 it replaces, likely in an effort to cut costs.
Unnamed sources claim that Tesla has received a large number of complaints regarding the problem and is instructing service centers to downplay any safety issues. Tesla’s immediate solution appears to be replacing the faulty computers, but a temporary software patch is also said to be in the works. The report adds that “Tesla Service is currently overwhelmed by the problem” and has had to postpone appointments for several weeks.
Tesla vehicles with the new computer are eligible for the latest version of the Full-Self Driving system, while models with the older HW3 computer will have to wait for a separate update. Notebook Check reports that Elon Musk recently said that Tesla will install the new computer for free if it can’t get the latest FSD to work on the HW3 unit.
