If you own a Sonos Roam, you shouldn’t leave it unattended and on charge for long periods of time. Sonos has acknowledged reports from some users who have found their Roam speaker has overheated when on charge, and in some cases the USB-C charging port has then melted.
Spotted by Bloomberg, multiple people have uploaded evidence of their speakers overheating to Reddit. One user posted photos of the damage done to their speaker, which then saw other Roam owners follow up saying they’d experienced similar.
The thread shows at least three people who have been impacted recently, while there are also older reports dating back to earlier in 2025. This doesn’t appear to be a brand-new issue. Some of those affected have confirmed Sonos acknowledged the damage and replaced their speaker.
Sonos told Bloomberg it has seen a small number of impacted customers. A spokesperson said, “We’ve closely tracked a limited number of reports involving the USB-C charging connection on some first-generation Sonos Roam speakers.”
“While the overall incidence rate is very low, and environmental conditions appear to play a role, we’ve taken several proactive steps to even further reduce the likelihood of this issue, including software updates and hardware improvements.”
If you own a Sonos Roam, be careful when recharging the speaker and you shouldn’t leave it unattended when on charge for long periods. This appears to be when the overheating is happening, and you’ll want to closely monitor your own product.
You should also ensure you download the latest software updates to your speaker as Sonos says it has made improvements with over-the-air changes.

So far, there are no reports of the same problem happening to the Sonos Roam 2 or Sonos Roam SL. The company no longer sells the original Roam speaker, which first launched in 2021, as it has been replaced by the second gen.
Sonos recently appointed a new CEO to help in the company’s turnaround after a tumultuous year at the company. The brand rolled out a new app in 2024 that was criticized by many Sonos owners as it stripped back the features available.
