PlayStation Studios’ new first-party studio, Dark Outlaw, is being led by one of the chief architects of Call of Duty’s Zombies franchise, Jason Blundell.
The development was confirmed by Blundell on journalist Jeff Gerstmann’s podcast. “I’ve had the amazing opportunity to create a new studio within PlayStation Studios for Sony,” Blundell said. “The studio is called Dark Outlaw. And so Dark Outlaw Games have been working away in the shadows for a while, and when we’ve got something to talk about, we’ll step out into the light.”
This is a refreshing move, considering the fact that Sony has shut down more studios than it has established since 2021. The company’s recent shutdowns, as noted by ComicBook, include Firewalk Studios, Japan Studio, London Studio, Neon Koi, and Pixelopus. Additionally, to boost its first-party offerings, the company has pivoted to acquisitions, such as Bungie, Insomniac Games, and Bluepoint Games.
“It’s such a privilege to be able to do it with Sony as a new first-party studio, Sony doesn’t start up first-party studios all the time, so to have that privilege is humbling,” Blundell added, without revealing what title or even what game genre Dark Outlaw is working on.
This marks Blundell’s second major collaboration with PlayStation Studios. In 2021, the two established Deviation Games to develop a new IP. However, Blundell left the studio in 2022, before it was eventually shut down last year without its first title ever getting revealed.

The news about PlayStation’s new first-party studio arrives at a time when Sony’s going through a tricky phase. The company’s new live service shooter, Concord, backfired and was shut down within a month of its launch last year. More game cancellations and a day-long global outage followed this year.
