According to Reuters, Sony is planning the purchase of Kadokawa, the company that owns the majority of FromSoftwareone of the most popular and prestigious Japanese studios of the moment. FromSoftware are, as we know, responsible for franchises soulslike such as the recent and acclaimed ‘Elden Ring’, and highly successful precedents such as ‘Sekiro’, ‘Dark Souls’ or ‘Bloodborne’. Reuters states that negotiations are progressing positively and that in the coming weeks we could see an announcement.
Both companies have declined to comment on the negotiations. Currently, Kadokawa owns 70% of FromSoftware, and Sony in turn also participates in part of the studio, with 14%. Let us remember that Sony also has a small stake in Kadokawa, just 2%, a symbolic portion that has undoubtedly paved the way for this possible purchase.
Kadokawa’s history dates back to 1945, the year in which the company was founded to publish books and magazines. It was in the nineties when they began to enter the video game industry, in a partially similar way to what FromSoftware did, which was born in 1986 serving other sectors and only in the nineties did it change its business towards video games.
This news coincides in time with the rumors of the launch of a remastered ‘Dark Souls 3’, comments that have seen the light in the Xbox Era podcast. It is the best-selling game in the franchise, with 10 million copies worldwide. In any case, it is the icing on the cake for a future that could be very different from how we know it for FromSoftware: within Sony, its games could be exclusive to its console, which would undoubtedly significantly boost the interest in the Playstation catalog, directly rivaling Microsoft’s recent purchases of Bethesda and Activision.
