If the manufacturers promise increased performance in the middle of the night, LED lights are also more likely to dazzle road users in front. According to a RAC study, Royal Automobile Club, 89% of motorists estimate that certain headlights are too powerful. 28% judge that modern optics are brighter than necessary. 91% say they have already been dazzled74% claim that this phenomenon is recurrent. For two thirds of these usersthe solution was considerably reduce their appearance. Then arises for many users the question of the impact of these devices, and the reactions which drivers them, on road safety. Finally, with the democratization of SUVs, where optics are placed above, the risk of dazzling would be greater for holders of lower vehicles.

A petition was submitted to the site of the Government and the Parliament of the United Kingdom, by a citizen worried about seeing these optics create road accidents. The petition already displays 3418 signatures and the government will thus be brought to answer this question once the threshold of the 10,000 exceeded. But the British government did not wait for this level to be crossed, since the parliamentary statement of state to the transport of the United Kingdom brought a first element of response.

Lilian Greenwood explique : “National statistics on collisions, which can record the dazzling of lighthouses as a contributory factor, show no discernible trend suggesting that advances in lighting technology contribute negatively to road vehicle collisions”. She all the same adds that “Noting the growing concern of the public, the government commissioned an independent study to better understand the deep causes of the dazzling lights and develop potential countermeasures”. She specifies that this work is underway and that the results were to be known in the summer of 2025.

According to AutoPlusit will consist in studying the levels of light in real conditions on the roads of the country. The researchers will look into several parameters ranging from ambient brightness, weather conditions or the intensity of the sentences of surrounding vehicles.

And in France?

For the time being, no study of the genre is on the program. Recall that the regulations force manufacturers to limit the light power to 2,000 lumens per projector in the absence of a flagship and 3,000 if the vehicle has it. It can nevertheless note that the United Nations also looked at this thorny question via a group of experts. Their conclusions are expected for the month of September 2027 and could make it possible to hatch harmonized regulations around the world. A LED ban does not seem to be on the program for the next few years.

Namely

At night, the perception of relief, contrasts and colors is altered. The perception of distances is thus distorted. When a bright light is turned on the face of the motorist, the driver is blinded for a few seconds. In case of crossing, drivers are invited to fix the continuous white line to avoid this phenomena. It is also advisable to lower the rear view mirror in the night position for vehicles at the rear. Finally, a windshield or dirty mirrors can amplify dazzling.
