Germany’s Sovereign Tech Agency (formerly Sovereign Tech Fund) announced they have begun investing in GFortran for advancing this leading open-source Fortran code compiler.
The Sovereign Tech Agency is providing €360k in funding to advance this Fortran compiler with more modern and efficiency capabilities particularly to benefit high performance computing (HPC) and scientific research workloads.
The funding will allow for work on Fortran coarray support, improving distributed memory functionality, resiliency improvements, fixing compliance issues, and enhancing scalarization support.
More details on this Sovereign Tech Agency funding for GFortran can be found via this page as part of their May newsletter for this excellent agency funded by the German government.
GFortran is easily the dominant open-source Fortran compiler right now while LLVM’s Flang front-end to Fortran has also been seeing improvements too as another nice alternative.
