It looks like Spotify wants you to have more control over its recommendation algorithm. After rolling out an AI-powered playlist-suggestion feature earlier this year, the music streamer last week announced a feature that lets you tweak the songs it recommends on the homepage.

Called Taste Profile, the feature describes your current interests based on your music, podcast, and audiobook listening habits, and allows you to modify it from a prompt box below.

The default description is detailed and outlines the kind of music you’re leaning toward. If you want to hear less of something or explore a new artist or genre, you can describe that in natural language.

“I want to start listening to more Justin Bieber,” reads the prompt in a Spotify demo. Once the prompt is accepted, the demo shows a new row of Bieber songs and albums appear on the homepage. It’s unclear if the prompt box will have a character limit. We’ve reached out to Spotify for clarification and will update if we hear back.

With Taste Profile, the streamer aims to make personalization more transparent and responsive. “Your input helps determine what gets prioritized, what gets dialed back, and what you discover next on the Spotify homepage,” Spotify says.

The company will begin testing the feature in New Zealand in the coming weeks. At launch, it will be limited to users on the Premium subscription, which received a price hike in the US earlier this year. Based on the demo, eligible users will be able to access Taste Profile from the Profile tab (display picture) on the homepage.
