After the deployment of a new Steam family system, the Valve platform is implementing a major new feature for its users. Following a few months of testing on the beta version of the client this summer, the PC gaming giant has just opened its game recording tool to all players. The overhaul of the interface launched in June 2023 therefore continues with the possibility of recording your video game exploits directly from the Steam overlay. If you’ve never been able to find what you’re looking for with the tools offered by NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Xbox Game Bar or other third-party software, the update offered by Valve has it all.
The developers have worked hard to offer an all-in-one solution that is as advanced as it is accessible. Save, review, edit and share from the Steam interface: this new feature promises a complete and perfectly integrated user experience. In broad terms, this tool is very classic, but it is in the details that it manages to stand out. Besides the possibility of recording your gaming sessions on Steam Deckthe numerous customization and comfort options will greatly facilitate the capture of key moments.
The perfect tool, by gamers, for gamers
Starting today, Steam players can start recording their games using the shortcut “Control + F11“. This can be modified from the launcher settings, in the new tab “Record party“. If you can’t find it, you need to update your Steam client. To do this, click on “Steam” in the upper left corner of the window and select “Check for Steam client updates“.
It is possible to record games manually, or activate different automatic recording modes in the background. Valve notably offers to record the last 120 minutes of gameplay in a temporary format, in order to be able to view them again and possibly save them if they contain some highlights. Steam then offers to export the extracts in MP4 format and share them via link, email or QR code. The settings also offer programming tools specific to each game. In this way, it is possible to activate the automation of recording in competitive titles, while keeping manual recording in other games in the library.
In order to facilitate the identification of the most important moments, Some compatible titles will be able to place automatic time markers. In the case of Dota 2 et Counter-Strike 2 for example, the recording timeline will indicate deaths and other significant passages. Players will also be able to place their own manual markers. To top it off, this integration from the Steam interface has been designed to consume as little as possible and not affect in-game performance. In terms of compatibility, Steam promises full support provided that the game allows the Steam overlay to be run. .
