The shift from physical SIM cards to eSIMs is gaining momentum in India, with major telecom providers like Airtel, Jio, Vi (Vodafone Idea), and BSNL offering eSIM services in select regions. An eSIM works just like a traditional SIM but is embedded digitally into your device, allowing for better connectivity and more convenience. eSIMs are compatible with smartphones such as Apple iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy S series, among others.
Why You Should Consider Switching to eSIM
Unlike physical SIM cards, eSIMs cannot wear out, get lost, or be physically damaged. They also allow users to store multiple mobile numbers on a single device, making it easier to manage personal and work contacts. However, it’s important to be careful because deleting the eSIM accidentally from your device will immediately cut off your network connection.
How to Request an eSIM
The process for requesting an eSIM varies by telecom provider:
- Jio Users: Apply through the MyJio app or visit a nearby Jio store.
- Airtel and Vi Users: Submit your request via the official app, or send an SMS to 121 or 199 with the text eSIM (confirm the number with your operator).
- BSNL Users: Visit your nearest customer service center to complete your eSIM application. KYC verification is required, so carry your Aadhaar card.
Steps to Activate Your eSIM
Once your request is approved, follow these steps to download and activate the eSIM:
- Receive QR Code: You will get a QR code via your registered email address.
- Access eSIM Settings: Open your phone’s settings, then navigate to Mobile Networks, Cellular, or SIM Services.
- Add eSIM: Select Add eSIM or Download eSIM.
- Scan QR Code: Use the option Use QR Code to scan the code received via email.
- IVR Confirmation: You will receive an IVR call to confirm your eSIM activation.
- The activation process may take up to four hours.
Security Precautions
After successful activation, your physical SIM will be deactivated automatically, and all network services will shift to the eSIM. As per TRAI regulations, SMS services will be unavailable for the first 24 hours to prevent SIM swap fraud. This step ensures the safety of your mobile number and personal information.
