Behind Cochonnet, we find Pierre Boudoin, computer engineer installed in Gironde, who develops applications in his free time. With this creation, it is addressed directly to pétanque players, whether Sunday or more experienced Sunday, by offering them a simple and effective solution to decide the measurement disputes … but not only.
Concretely, Cochonnet allows you to analyze a photo taken from an iPhone to automatically detect the balls and the jack. Thanks to a computer vision algorithm boosted with machine learning (Apple Coreml), the application instantly calculates the distances and classifies the balls in the order of the closest to the closest. It goes even further by offering a complete points counting system, with team management, score and sleeve history. In other words, it replaces both the meter and the score book.
Tailor -made technology
To achieve this result, the author of the app has designed an automatic learning model specifically trained to recognize pétanque balls in all possible configurations: direct light, shadow, grass, sand, irregular soil … Artificial intelligence embedded in the smartphone is then responsible for analyzing distances independently, without internet connection.
The tool is therefore 100 % mobile and is used on all terrains, even the most remote. It does not require any sensor or external equipment, just an iPhone (or iPad) equipped with iOS 17 minimum. Because unfortunately, at present, the app is only available on the Apple App Store.
Available since early July, Cochonnet has experienced a quick start: more than 12,000 downloads in ten days, and a place in the top 10 sports applications in France and the first opinions are very positive.
On the Business Model side, P Dochonnet works according to a freemium logic. The free version allows you to discover features, but imposes limits (such as a reduced number of measures). A subscription to a few euros per year or a final purchase make it possible to unlock the whole.
Notable fact: unlike many mobile apps, Sochonnet does not collect any personal data. The developer claims an approach respectful of privacy and without advertisements.
