Superman is now streaming. James Gunn’s comic book blockbuster, which is also the first big-screen release since DC Studios rebranded, gives the titular Kryptonian a new coat of paint. And honestly, I can’t wait to watch it again.
Gunn wrote and directed the movie — which is an achievement in and of itself when you consider that he was also writing every episode of Peacemaker season 2 — and took inspiration mostly from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s celebrated All-Star Superman comic. It’s beautiful to look at, full of joy, the soundtrack slaps, and if you read my review of Superman, you’d know I absolutely loved this movie.
Krypto, Superman’s canine companion, steals the show in James Gunn’s Superman.
David Corenswet steps into the Man of Steel’s big red boots to chart a new course for the familiar story. Alongside him are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Ed Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce as Perry White and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.
Appearances by the Justice Gang and cameos from John Cena’s Peacemaker and Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. provide the connective tissue between this movie and the DC titles Gunn brought to HBO Max. Superman also sets the stage for next summer’s Supergirl movie, starring Milly Alcock, further expanding this new DC Universe.
