The vast majority of UK tech firms are based outside of London, according to new data that reveals the overlooked impact of businesses beyond the capital.
New data from Beauhurst commissioned by Startup Coalition and UK Tech Week found that as many as two-thirds of Britain’s tech businsesses are based outside of London.
The data found there are more than 83,000 active tech companies that employ 3.7 million people across the UK, with 54,000 being based outside of London.
“The UK is home to some of the world’s most exciting tech talent and trailblazing businesses – innovators who are creating new technologies, new opportunities, and new jobs in our communities every single day. Our regional tech ecosystems are crucial to powering this success,” said AI Minister Kanishka Narayan.
According to analysis from Startup Coalition, the average number of employees per tech company in London is 57, while outside of London it is 38, which the group claimed indicated a growing regional ecosystem of early-stage startups.
“We see incredible companies being built across the UK, with many British cities beating some of Europe’s largest tech hubs,” said Startup Coalition founder Dom Hallas.
“Yet too often we hear the rhetoric that London is the only UK city where you can build a world-leading technology business.”
