Giant EV Tesla Inc TSLA has reportedly started rolling out its full self-driving (FSD) driver assistance software to select Cybertruck drivers.
What happened: The limited rollout was highlighted by Tesla enthusiast on social media platform X Sawyer Merritt on Sunday.
“Great job done by the Tesla AI team in achieving the goals set for September,” said the Tesla senior executive Ashok Elluswamy wrote, seemingly confirming the rollout.
Tesla is rolling out FD updates first to a select number of customers and later to its broader customer base, implying that more Cybertrucks will get access to the software in time.
In the timeline Tesla provided earlier this month for FSD improvements, Tesla said it will implement FSD on Cybertruck in September. The company, known for its product and feature delays, has seemingly met its timeline this time.
Why it’s important: The Cybertruck is Tesla’s latest offering. The company started delivering the vehicle in late November and since then, customers have been requesting FSD for the stainless steel truck. Although Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously provided with multiple tentative timelines, none have materialized.
FSD is the most advanced version of Tesla’s driver assistance functions, the so-called autopilot.
However, the names are a misnomer because the features do not make the vehicle autonomous or self-driving, but require active driver supervision. However, FSD enables automatic lane changing, navigating junctions and more.
Musk has previously said that FSD will eventually make autonomous driving possible.
