So far, Tesla’s cars were satisfied with a 4G LTE modem capping at 100 MB/s. From now on, the brand includes a Quectel AG555QGL modem, capable of supporting up to 2.4 GB/s in download and 550 Mb/s to send on 5G NR networks to the United States. Even in 4G advanced, this modem reaches 1.6 GB/s in reception and 200 Mb/s in emission, speeds without common measure with current capacities.

Two -speed connectivity

Approved by the Federal Commission Commission (FCC), this modem is designed to withstand automobile constraints, with an operating range from –40 ° C to +85 ° C. This is obviously a very important point for a vehicle likely to evolve in all kinds of sometimes hostile environments.

The first models integrating this component should therefore offer a significantly faster connection, especially for the most gourmet online services of Tesla. Grok, the house bot, but also remote monitoring via Sentry Mode or Dog Mode, will therefore be entitled to much better performance, and more stable.

This upgrade still poses a substantive question: will all customers benefit from it? Tesla offers two formulas: standard connectivity, free but limited to navigation, and premium connectivity, billed € 9.99 per month. The latter formula gives access to multimedia services and advanced functions.

Problem: despite its Price, the Premium option is still based on the 4G LTE modem installed for years. Some owners have already opted for third -party solutions such as laptops, just to fill this lack. The arrival of the Quectel AG555QGL in the official catalog of spare parts of Tesla (under the title “Telemetics Control Unit TCU – Gen II”) confirms that the fragmentation will increase: on the one hand recent vehicles taking advantage of 5G, on the other the old restrained models will be satisfied with 4G.

Will Tesla offer a hardware update program? This had been the case during the transition from 3G to 4G. Otherwise, the owners of older vehicles could feel injured, while more and more connected services are absolutely essential for Tesla “experience”.

The integration of 5G is a logical step for the Californian manufacturer. Cars are transformed into real digital platforms, they are able to receive frequent software updates and run gourmet data services. The speed and reliability of the connection are no longer nice accessories to have: they become downright essential.
