What if the Apple Watch stopped being an anti-Android lock? This is what Vivo suggests, who has teased his next foldable smartphone, the X Fold 5. In a publication on Weibo, Han Boxiao, product manager of the Chinese manufacturer, says this device would be the first Android phone compatible with Apple’s connected watch.
An Android smartphone that speaks to the Apple Watch
According to him, the Apple Watch could display incoming calls and messages received on the X Fold 5, and the health data collected by the watch could even be synchronized with the health application of Vivo. A major promise when you know that so far the Apple Watch is completely closed to Android devices, a long -term strategy by Apple.
But that’s not all: Vivo also announces that his phone can connect to iCloud, directly from the integrated file manager. It could also be used as a secondary screen for a Mac, control an Apple computer remotely and operate with AirPods. Clearly, Vivo promises an Android smartphone at ease in the Apple ecosystem, a land so far carefully locked by the apple firm.
If these features are confirmed, they would constitute a turning point in the mobile strategy – not of Apple, but of its competitors. Because until now, Apple Watch is a major brake for users attempted by Android, but attached to their watch.
The fact remains that caution is essential. Apple has never officially connected an Apple Watch to an Android device, and there is no indication that it has changed. It is therefore more likely that Vivo uses software tips, or even gateways always involving an Apple device in the equation – like an iPhone to make the link.
One can also imagine that Vivo is based on a trend started by other Chinese brands like OPPO, which offer continuity functions between Android and MacOS, in particular with the management of iCloud files or screen projection.
While waiting to have a concrete demonstration, it is difficult to know if the compatibility announced with the Apple Watch is native or is based on bypass. The manufacturer remains vague on technical details, which does not help.
Regardless of this opening to the Apple universe, the Vivo X Fold 5 seems to want to play in the big leagues. The device has a very bright screen (up to 4,500 nits), a high frequency PWM gradation system and Tüv Rheinland certification for visual comfort.
No official release date has yet been communicated, but the launch could take place by the end of the month. It remains to be seen if Vivo will really manage to break the wall between Android and Apple or if all this teasing was just a well -wrapped marketing mirage.
