Ayn has revealed its long-awaited dual-screen handheld, the Thor, and it’s giving serious Nintendo DS vibes.

After a tease, the company has revealed all about the Thor, which will be available in a number of models.

The Thor Lite will be available for preorder for $249, while the premium Thor Max will cost $429. There’s also a Base model for $299 and a Pro model for $349.

The Thor features a primary six-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a secondary 3.92-inch AMOLED screen at 60Hz. The Lite model is powered by a Snapdragon 865 processor, while the Base, Pro and Max versions will use the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. All three run on Android.

Plenty of choice

The Lite model offers 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage, while the Max can be configured with 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage. In the middle, the Base has 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, while the Pro has 12GB + 256GB.

The Thor also has a 6000 mAh battery, video output, a USB-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a TF card slot. There’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for connectivity.

Ayn has reinforced the hinge to make it more durable and there’s an active cooling system and Hall effect joysticks.

Preorders are live now with shipments expected to begin in the middle of October. The Thor will be available in black, white, rainbow and clear purple.

The launch comes as the dual-screen handheld market heats up with Ayaneo’s Pocket DS and Retroid’s Flip 2 also launching recently.

Opinion

While I haven’t taken the plunge and bought one, i have been getting increasingly intriguiged by this new wave of portable gaming PCs in wacky, often retro-styled, form-factors,

The Thor is clearly ‘inspired’ by the Nintendo DS with its upper and lower displays. It’s a quirky look and one that will certainly appeal to the generation that grew up with Ninty’s dual-screen Game Boy successor.
