Borderlands 4 was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated games of 2025. successor to a cult franchise mixing loot, frantic action and corrosive humor, the title of Gearbox arrived on PC and consoles at the start of the school year. On paper, everything seemed together for a triumph. Critics are generally positive, with a record STEAM launch of more than 300,000 players connected simultaneously and an immediate place among the best sales. However, a few weeks after its release, the conversation around the game is not happy. The players not only evoke the universe or the new games of gameplay, but especially the performance problems.
Upon his arrival, Borderlands 4 benefited from flattering assessments in the specialized press. The game presents itself as an ambitious, larger and visually impressive suite than its predecessors. But on Steam, the overall note quickly went to “mixed”. The reasons? Framerate drops, recurring bugs and a recourse deemed too compulsory for technologies such as the DLSS and the generation of frames to maintain correct fluidity. More worrying, these problems do not only concern modest machines. Several testimonies say that even with a high -end configuration it is difficult to exceed 60 FPS in 1440p without upscaling.
Randy Pitchford against the community
Instead of calming the storm, the boss of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, chose to go up to the niche on X (formerly Twitter), which is more or less always a bad idea. True to his reputation, he multiplies the answers to frustrated players. Above all, it responds to those who complain about insufficient performance. But instead of helping them, he prefers to discourage them from buying the game. Worse still, he encourages them to request a refund of their purchase. For example, he declares:
“You can do what you want. The game is what is. If you are not satisfied, ask for a refund from Steam. You have made an analogy with a vehicle. I would not put a Ferrari engine in a Monster Truck hoping that it is rolling like a Ferrari. If you give me your specifications, I can help you optimize your performance. So if you are not satisfied with the tools at your disposal to improve the frequency of images and you are not satisfied with the frequency of images you have, you should play another game. ”

He obviously does not stop there and uses sarcasm as well as criticism to counter the players’ arguments. We can say that the debate is not very high but once again, we are talking about X so nothing is really surprising.
“Create your own engine and show us how you do it, please. We will be your customers when you can do it. Those who are currently trying to do so are clearly stupid and do not know what they are doing. Even the support, recommendations, code and architecture of the largest global computer and technology companies, who work with the best coders of real-time graphic engines in the world, do not know what you seem to know. /sarcasm ”

A success that divides
Despite the controversy, Borderlands 4 continues to attract crowds. The title remains in the top 10 of the most active games on Steam and retains a solid fans base. But the contrast between criticism enthusiasm and laborious field experiences fuels a climate of distrust. It remains to be seen if Gearbox will deploy fixes to stabilize the game and calm a community that does not tire of reminding that Borderlands has always been a saga for all players, not only for those who can afford a PC at more than € 1,500.
