First target: the French Archery Federation (FFTA). The organization warned its members that a data leak had taken place, affecting 77,256 people. Among the compromised information, there are names, first names, birth dates, email and postal addresses, and even profile photos of the licensees.
The archery and climbing in turmoil
The FFTA ensures that passwords have not been compromised because they were encrypted, but prefers to play the card of prudence by announcing a reset of access to all the users concerned. The attack would have taken place in early January but was only discovered on the 20th of the month, sufficient for the hackers to make their market.
The FFTA misadventure would only be the part of the iceberg. Shortly after, the French Federation of Mountain and Climbing (FFME) announced a similar hacking, this time impacting 120,000 licensees. Same diagram: names, first names, birth dates, email and postal addresses, phone numbers and identifiers are found in nature.
The reason for this double attack? A common computer service provider, used by several sports federations. In other words, only one breach was enough for several organizations to be compromised. A domino effect that may not stop there, especially since other federations could be affected.
This is what Clément Domingo, cybersecurity expert, who fears new rebounds in the coming days. If the pirates have had access to the databases of several federations, it is a safe bet that other announcements of the same kind will follow.
Faced with this situation, the FFME invites its members to redouble vigilance. Among the threats to be monitored: phishing (phishing), which consists in usurping an identity to steal sensitive information, but also scam and identity theft. The Federation recalls that you should never share its bank details or password by email or phone.
For its part, the CNIL was informed of the incident. It remains to be seen if it will look at the security measures taken by the federations and their computer service provider. This beginning of the year starts strong in terms of cyber attacks. After signs like Kiabi and Showroomprive, it’s the sports world to end up in the sights of the Hackers. Who will be the next on the list?
