During the press conference for the new episodes, Danny McBride (who created the series and is also a writer, executive producer and the program’s star) discussed the recurring ideas in season 4.
“When I started writing the season, I wasn’t sure if I was going to finish the show or not, but I started to notice getting these ideas,” he said. “So many themes and storylines were about inclusion and about moving forward, about moving on, that it, really, to me, creatively, became apparent that that was the story that we’re telling.”
McBride continued: “The story is about a lot of things, but the track of the arc that I sort of followed through all four (seasons) is really about grief. It’s about losing people and turning to family and figuring out what’s next.”
Starring alongside McBride are Adam Devine, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Tony Cavalero, Greg Alan Williams, Skyler Gisondo, Walton Goggins, Jennifer Nettles, Megan Mullally and Seann William Scott, among many others. Bradley Cooper guest-starred in the first episode of the new season.

Episode four of the nine-episode, fourth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones is set to premiere Sunday, March 30, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max. The remaining five episodes will arrive each Sunday until the series finale appears on May 4.
