the foldable which still pushes the limits of finesse

The race for finesse continues in the world of the smartphone and Honor had the ambition to recover his title at the start of the summer of 2025. No doubt upset to have left his crown at the Oppo Find N5, the Chinese brand has just lifted the veil on the Honor Magic V5 in China. With its 8.8 mm thick, the Magic V5 narrowly exceeds its competitor (8.93 mm) and this meager gap confirms that limits are reached.

A few months ago, Oppo warned that the quest for absolute finesse touched its physical limits, unless a major technological breakthrough. The announcement of the Honor Magic V5 seems to prove them right.

The war of the millimeter: how the Honor Magic V5 reconquered its crown

This victory, as symbolic as it is, is accompanied by an asterisk since this record is only valid for the white version. Opt for black, gold or brown, and the thickness climbs to 9.0 mm. This detail is not trivial and illustrates the engineering contortions necessary to grab the slightest hundredth. Honor had to juggle a specific steel hinge and its famous silicon-carbon battery to reach this figure. Opposite, Oppo uses a similar battery but opted for a titanium alloy hinge, potentially more robust as explains Notebookcheck.

Beyond this slimming race, the Magic V5 is a racing beast. It is propelled by the overpowered Snapdragon 8 Elite of Qualcomm, supported by 12 or 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage in China. Its two screens, an external 6.4 inch and an intern of 7.95 inches, promise a spectacular cutting -edge brightness of 5,000 nits, even if we note that the method of measuring this maximum brightness is not specified and that the typical brightness will probably be more modest.

A powerful and photophone folding smartphone

On the battery side, the most upscale Chinese model has a 6,100 mAh cell, while international versions will have to “satisfy” 5,820 mAh. The 66 W wired load is fast, but slightly below the 80 W of the Find N5, while the 50 W wireless load is part of the Chinese flagship standard.

What about the camera? Honor did not compromise, incorporating a trio composed of a main sensor of 50 Mpx, an ultra-angle of 50 Mpx and, above all, a periscopic telephoto of 64 Mpx with 3X optical zoom. It is more megapixels than the Find N5, but with smaller pixels. Finally, there is a 20 MP selfie camera.

Price and availability

The Magic V5 is displayed from 8,999 yuan on the Chinese market for the 12 + 256 GB configuration, or around 1,065 euros off-taxes. The most high -end model, at 10,999 yuan (1,305 euros HT), has 1 TB (16 GB of RAM). It goes without saying that these prices could increase up to 30 % when the phone is marketed on international markets, especially in Europe. The Magic V5 is already displayed on the brand’s French site and could land in our regions at the start of the school year. Honor France also promises that it will be “soon available”.

Honor therefore returned to his crown, but the battle of the folders is no longer played on technical KOs. It is a war of details, nuances, tenths of millimeters. The Magic V5 is a champion, of course, but a champion who knows that his closest rival is just behind him, at breath.

But where did the Magic V4 go?

If you are wondering where the Magic V4 has gone, do not look. In a nod to a well -known superstition in the world of Asian tech, Honor jumped a generation. Tetraphobia, or the fear of figure four, has struck again, as is often the case for many Chinese companies. It is therefore not a striking error, but a deliberate cultural decision which brings us directly to the Magic V5.
