Prime Video hasn’t been the best place for comedies this year. Several of the streaming service’s original movies have been forgettable, half-baked action-comedies that haven’t exactly impressed. However, as of today (December 29), Amazon’s streamer is now home to a truly hysterical watch fronted by Liam Neeson.
I’m of course talking about Akiva Schaffer’s “The Naked Gun.” A sequel to the iconic police spoof comedy trilogy fronted by Leslie Nielsen, this follow-up originally hit theaters over the summer, and it’s a sequel that absolutely measures up to that comedic legacy.
What is ‘The Naked Gun’ about?
Watch On
In “The Naked Gun,” we follow Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson), who has followed in his father’s footsteps and become a Police Squad officer, just like his old man. After his reckless policing lands him in hot water, Drebin finds himself investigating a mysterious murder case and, ultimately, trying to save Police Squad (and the world).
Alongside Liam Neeson, “The Naked Gun” also stars Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu and Moses Jones. It also features appearances from Dave Bautista, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Cody Rhodes, Busta Rhymes and Priscilla Presley.
‘The Naked Gun’ had me in stitches, and I hope it’s a hit on Prime Video
I’ve said it before, and now we’re at the end of the year, I can say it even more confidently: “The Naked Gun” is the most hilarious thing I’ve watched all year. Nothing has made me laugh harder (or more frequently) throughout 2025 than “The Naked Gun.”
Fact is, “The Naked Gun” is just so densely packed with gags of all kinds — comic quips, sight gags, non-sequiturs, and recurring jokes galore — that there’s something funny happening every few seconds. Even if you don’t personally find every gag funny, there are just so many things happening that, inevitably, you’re laughing again within seconds. It’s superb silliness of the highest order.
The writers deserve plenty of praise for dreaming up all the laughs — and for pulling together a mindless plot robust enough to carry this chaos — but the whole thing would’ve fallen apart without a strong comic presence, and that’s where Liam Neeson comes in. If you’re mostly familiar with his action roles, you may be surprised to see him at the helm, but rest assured, his gruff, deadpan “Naked Gun” performance is pitch-perfect for the type of movie this is.
If you need a little more convincing, “The Naked Gun” is sitting at an 87% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes (aggregated from over 300 logged reviews, at the time of writing). Allowing for some differing comedic tastes, I’d say that’s a pretty strong endorsement from across the moviegoing landscape, right?
So, with all that said, should you stream “The Naked Gun” on Prime Video? In a word: Yes. It is ridiculous, laugh-out-loud viewing, and if you’re looking for some light entertainment while waiting for New Year’s celebrations to get underway, this is the watch you should turn to right now.
