The next chapter in legal AI innovation is here. Following successful launches in the USA and Australia, LexisNexis Protégé is now available to legal professionals across the UK. Designed to bring personalised AI assistance and agentic intelligence into everyday legal work.

Imagine an AI assistant that not only helps you draft documents and summarise cases but also knows what step to take next. That’s the promise of Protégé. It understands multi-step tasks, reviews its own work and keeps the workflow going without needing constant instructions.

What is Protégé?

Protégé represents the next evolution in legal AI, agentic intelligence. Unlike traditional tools that execute one command at a time, Protégé can plan, adapt, and follow through on complex legal workflows. It operates like an assistant that thinks several steps ahead. This marks the third wave in AI development.

First wave: Extractive AI transformed research by surfacing the most relevant results from vast datasets.

Second wave: Generative AI enabled the rapid creation of content, based on user prompts.

Third wave: Agentic AI can reason across tasks, act autonomously, learn from context, and suggest refinements without needing step-by-step instructions.

Protégé combines the precision of extractive AI, the creativity of generative AI and the initiative of agentic AI to deliver a uniquely powerful assistant built for modern legal practice.

What makes it different

What sets Protégé apart is its ability to seamlessly manage complex, multi-step legal tasks through agentic workflow. Whether drafting transactional documents, summarising case materials, or generating graphical timelines from evidence, Protégé not only completes these tasks but reviews its own output before presenting it for final human validation.

It also offers proactive prompting and intelligent workflow suggestions. Simply upload a document and Protégé will recommend next steps, such as drafting a summary or initiating legal research.

With Vault integration, Protégé securely stores and processes tens of thousands of documents, enabling clause extraction, research, and drafting at scale.

The assistant is also deeply personalised, integrating with leading Document Management Systems like iManage and SharePoint, so users can tap into their firm’s knowledge base effortlessly.

Fully embedded within Lexis+ AI and Lexis Create+ for Microsoft Word, Protégé brings advanced AI directly into daily workflows, enhancing productivity without disrupting established practices.

A legal assistant that thinks ahead

Here’s what the impact of Protégé can look like in real life:

Need to write a contract from scratch? Protégé drafts it, checks it over, and hands it to you for review.  Upload a document, and it can summarise it, suggest next steps, or even create a timeline of events.  Ask it a legal question, and it’ll refine your query so you get better results, faster.

It’s smart enough to learn from context and secure enough to meet the highest professional standards.

As part of the Lexis+ AI ecosystem, Protégé is grounded in LexisNexis’ trusted legal content and built with the highest levels of security, privacy, and human oversight. It is fully compliant with UK data standards, and reflects LexisNexis’ commitment to responsible AI development, guided by the RELX Responsible AI Principles.

“Our vision is for every legal professional to have a personalised AI assistant that makes their life better, and we’re delighted to deploy that to the UK through our world-class, fully integrated AI technology platform,” said Gerry Duffy, managing director of LexisNexis UK.

Designed with UK lawyers, for UK lawyers

LexisNexis built Protégé in close collaboration with leading law firms, including Eversheds Sutherland International and Irwin Mitchell, to ensure the tool addresses the real, everyday demands of legal professionals.

“Working closely with LexisNexis during the development of Protégé has given us the opportunity to help shape a tool that genuinely addresses the practical demands of legal work,” Eleanor Windsor, partner and director of knowledge at Irwin Mitchell.

Intentionally developed through a customer-driven innovation programme, from early concept to launch, feedback has shaped everything.

The future delivered today

LexisNexis Protégé isn’t just a glimpse of what AI can do in legal practice, it’s a practical, secure, and intelligent solution that’s ready to work for you right now. By combining powerful technology with deep legal expertise and close collaboration with UK firms, Protégé is redefining what’s possible in legal workflows.

In partnership with LexisNexis.
