If you are something like me, chances are that you are sick of all the software that you have made gaming hardware to download only to adjust it. MSI has just announced that it will no longer be one of those companies, if you prefer
MSI has shown MSI Portal X, a website that “eliminates the need for software installation”. In fact, you can synchronize RGB lighting on MSI equipment without a special app. Since software is routinely the worst part of the most hardware, I am happy to see that MSI users get the chance to skip it.
However, it is worth noting that this website is not a way for your equipment to get software updates. Every now and then you must involve the drivers to keep your equipment up-to-date. I am careful that this can cause users to ignore software -updates, but only update if there is a problem is a fairly usual way to use hardware.
If you want to control RGB and at the same time want one of the latest updates, MSI Center is still available to download, and although our experiences with MSI’s handheld software are not great, we have no big complaints at MSI Center, just a few small little ones.
The biggest crime that connects MSI Center is just another app to keep up-to-date, and an app that you should stop starting when you switch on your PC. After the first installation it feels like more bloat on a rig.

Early screenshots suggest that Portalx is a very simple app, giving users the opportunity to change colors, brightness and effect of the lighting of their hardware, and not much more. That is more than enough to make your rig look a little more colorful.
MSI Portalx marks a trend that I am a big fan of. Last month, Corsair announced that it would implement its own web app for peripherals, and manufacturers such as Wooting and Keychron have web apps that you can use to prevent software from being downloaded.
Unfortunately, the Corsair -app only works with peripherals, but MSI Portalx, as shown in the press release, will also work with hardware such as an MSI RTX 5090 and MSI mother boards.
We do not yet have a full release date on MSI Portalx, but given the announcement we think that it could go live in the near future. Just make sure that if you remove the MSI center, you make the habit of manually updating your equipment. It is a good habit of always having the newest drivers.
