The latest from Sergio Calderón, brand new director of RTVE, has been a signing that, on a strategic level, complements perfectly with the success that David Broncano is having from Monday to Thursday: Andreu Buenafuente and his regular collaborator Berto Romero will have a program on a similar schedule on Fridays. Humor with nuances of talk show (and with the collaboration in both cases of El Terrat, owned by Buenafuente, which is also in charge of the production of ‘La Revuelta’ now and ‘La resistance’ when it was on Movistar Plus+) takes over the public programming.
More humor. Behind this decision, which complements the presence of Broncano, a signing from the Ente’s previous management team, is the new director of TVE, Sergio Calderón, who has been in office since the beginning of December. The signing of Buenafuente (which according to TVE is “pending approval”) would be the comedian’s return to national television since the closure of ‘Late Motiv’, which he did on Movistar Plus+. Another curious parallel with Broncano, whose success has paved the way, according to El País, for successive collaborations with El Terrat.
More lucky decisions. Another highly commented attempt in this still brief Calderón administration has been to take Marc Giró’s ‘Late Xou’ to the prime time from La1. Giró has had a brilliant career on RTVE: his program began as a late night in Catalan with the territorial disconnection in 2023; In October of that same year he moved to La2; and as an experiment, a special of ‘Late doubt a movement in line, once again, with that touchstone that is turning out to be Broncano in La1.
And as a tip, Esteban. Calderón was for years one of the directors of Fabricantes Studio, the production company of ‘Sálvame’ at Mediaset, which later continued with the project when it was renamed ‘Ni que fuerámos shhh’. The rumor was sung, given Calderón’s statements that La1 wants to make its afternoons more competitive: ‘Sálvame’ could land, in its current form or in any other, on public television, competing with heavyweights like Ana Rosa Quintana and Sonsoles Ónega. The rumors have been denied by Belén Esteban herself, but her appearances on ‘La revuelta’ are increasingly frequent, with a historic one last Tuesday, January 7, that gave the program one of the largest audiences in its history.
The afternoons, weak point. If there is a key point on the La1 grid that does not work, it is the afternoons, as demonstrated by the aforementioned rumors regarding the arrival of the ‘Sálvame’ team to the network. Right now there are three daily series on the grid (‘Salón de Tea La Moderna’, ‘The Promise’ and ‘Valle Salvaje’), of which only ‘The Promise’ is working well. They are followed by the contest ‘The Hunter’ and ‘Here the Earth’, only with the latter providing good data. At the moment, the first of the three series and ‘The Hunter’, which will come off the grid in spring, have been sentenced, which leaves room for in-depth changes.
But… who is Sergio Calderón? Calderón was one of the main managers (director of content, innovation, marketing and communication) from Fabricantes Studio, the company that succeeded Fábrica de la Tele, creator of ‘Sálvame’. In December he would enter the management of TVE thanks to the decree law that allowed him to urgently renew his organization chart without counting on the votes of the Board of Directors. The objective: to end the managerial crisis that began with the resignation in September 2022 of president José Manuel Pérez Tornero and that generated a series of dismissals motivated largely by the signing of David Broncano, which includes his own dismissal in March 2024 of President José Pablo López, who returned to office after the express renewal of the Entity.
