The Sony Alpha 7 V arrives with major autofocus and video upgrades

Sony has officially announced the Alpha 7 V, the fifth-generation model in its hugely popular full-frame mirrorless series.

It’s a significant upgrade across the board, powered by a newly developed partially stacked 33MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor and the latest BIONZ XR2 processor with built-in AI.

This combination brings some of the biggest improvements the A7 line has seen in years. Sony claims that the AI processing delivers up to 30% better Real-time Recognition AF, thanks to more accurate subject detection and improved tracking across 759 phase-detection points that cover 94% of the frame. It also performs reliably in low light, down to EV -4.0, making it well-suited for wildlife, sports, and handheld night shooting.

Sony is also pushing speed further with blackout-free 30fps continuous shooting, backed by 60 AF/AE calculations per second. The new Pre-Capture mode can save up to a second of frames before the shutter is pressed, reducing the chance of missing unpredictable moments.

Big updates to video

For creators who shoot both stills and video, the Alpha 7 V offers a noticeable jump in flexibility. It supports 7K oversampled 4K at 60p, as well as 4K 120p in Super 35 mode, with full-pixel readout and no pixel binning for clean detail. Sony’s Dynamic Active Mode also returns to keep handheld footage smoother, while AI-based Auto Framing helps maintain composition automatically during recording.

Image quality gets a boost too, with Sony claiming up to 16 stops of dynamic range, improved colour accuracy, and a new AI-driven Auto White Balance system that analyses the scene for more consistent tone and less colour-correction in post.

On the usability front, the camera supports Wi-Fi 6E, dual USB-C ports, a 4-axis multi-angle rear display, better heat management for longer 4K sessions, and improved battery endurance. There’s also a redesigned grip aimed at making long shooting days more comfortable.

There’s a new kit lens too

Sony is launching a new kit lens alongside it, the FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II. It’s a compact, lightweight zoom designed to match the A7 V’s high-speed performance, offering body-lens stabilisation coordination and up to 120fps AF/AE tracking on compatible models.

The Sony Alpha 7 V will be available from December 2, 2025, for £2799/€2999, while the FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II will arrive in February 2026 for £429 / €479.
