These 5 features make your Amazon Echo way more useful

I’ve had Amazon Echo devices around my house for years. Weather checks, music playback, and the occasional timer were about the extent of my use. Then I spent some time in the Alexa app figuring out what else these things could do. I have several Echo Dots, Echo Shows, and Echo Hubs, plus a Ring security system, myQ smart garage doors, and a Ring doorbell camera. Turns out I was barely scratching the surface. These five features changed everything.

How temperature sensors cut my energy bills by 10%

Amazon added temperature and humidity sensors to the newer (5th generation) Echo and Echo Dot models. I linked mine to my Amazon Smart Thermostat in the Alexa app. One sensor went in each bedroom, a couple in the basement, and one in the great room. Instead of relying on a single thermostat mounted in the hallway, I’m now pulling temperature data from every corner of the house.

My son’s bedroom was always at least 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the place. His room faces south and gets direct sunlight all afternoon with no trees for shade. The multiple sensors let the thermostat see these temperature swings and adjust accordingly. Now every room stays comfortable. My energy bills dropped about 10%.

The setup was straightforward through the Alexa app. Each Echo device with a sensor becomes a monitoring point that feeds data to the smart thermostat. The system learns patterns over time.

Instant security alerts for doors and windows

I set up routines using Ring contact sensors. Whenever a door or window opens anywhere in the house, Alexa announces which one through the Echo devices and shows up on our Echo Hub displays, which I wired with PoE.

With a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old running around, this became essential fast. Our kids move quickly. If one of them opens a door, we hear about it immediately. This doubles as backup security when we forget to arm the Ring alarm. The audio notifications still work even when the system’s disarmed.

You can customize the announcements for different doors and windows. Set them to only trigger during specific times or when you’re home versus away. You get immediate, clear announcements instead of constantly checking the security app.

Whisper mode for nighttime use

Control your home without waking anyone

I was walking past my Echo Show around midnight, and the kids were finally asleep. I whispered, “Alexa, turn off the kitchen lights,” because I didn’t want to risk waking anyone. She whispered right back, “Okay,” in this quiet, hushed voice. It totally caught me off guard.

Turns out there’s a Whisper Mode built into Alexa. Say “Alexa, turn on Whisper Mode” or flip the switch in the Voice Responses settings. The system uses neural networks to pick up on your whisper and match your tone.

You need to get closer to the device than normal. Whispers don’t carry far, especially if there’s any background noise. Within a few feet, though, it works great.

I use it all the time now, like for turning on under-cabinet lights when I’m grabbing water at 2 AM. Or when I adjust the thermostat at night without speaking at full volume. Besides just controlling smart light switches and bulbs, you can whisper commands for pretty much any smart home device. It’s a small thing, but it makes a real difference when you’ve got light sleepers in the house.

Whole-home announcements and reminders

The Announcements feature broadcasts to every Echo at once. I use it for dinner calls, reminders that we need to leave, and letting everyone know there’s a package on the porch. Works way better than raising my voice and hoping someone hears me two floors up.

Reminders work on a timer or based on your location. I use these for taking medication, remembering to move the laundry, everything. If I’m running late getting home, I can send an announcement from the Alexa app on my phone. It plays through all the Echo devices at home.

All these Echo devices around the house basically function as an intercom now, with no wiring and installation—just instant communication to whoever’s home.

Kitchen math without touching your phone

Your kitchen’s new best friend

Hands-free calculations might not sound exciting, but they’re now essential in my kitchen. When I’m cooking with messy or wet hands, I ask “Alexa, what’s 4 liters to cups?” No need to stop, wash up, and grab my phone.

Metric to imperial? Check. Fahrenheit to Celsius for international recipes? Yep. It even converts weight measurements, volume, and recipe scaling. If I need to double a recipe calling for 3/4 cup of flour, Alexa gives me the answer while I keep working.

This works beyond the kitchen, too. In the garage or workshop, I use Echo devices for quick unit conversions during home improvement projects and basic math. The hands-free aspect makes this practical. You get answers while continuing with your task.

Making the most of your Echo devices

These features turned my Echo devices from fancy timers into something actually useful. Temperature control cut my energy bills, security alerts give me peace of mind with young kids, and other things saved me time, money, and energy. Most of this works with hardware you probably already have or can add affordably. Outside of our Echo devices (with the MyQ app), I automated our smart garage doors to close every night at 9 PM—no more accidentally leaving them wide open. Pick one feature that solves a problem in your house. I barely recognized how much I was missing out on until I actually started using this stuff properly.
