Motorola has refreshed its long-running Moto G lineup with a bunch of new wallet-friendly handsets. Anyone on the hunt for a cheap phone with photography clout will want to check out the Moto G77: its rear camera has more megapixels than any Moto G model to date, along with one of the brightest screens you’ll find for the cash. The even more affordable Moto G67 and G17 follow closely behind.
A 108MP main snapper with nine times the light-gathering ability of the Moto G77’s predecessor should deliver clean shots across a range of lighting conditions. Motorola reckons it can pull off “lossless” 3x magnification using sensor cropping, and it’s backed up by an 8MP ultrawide. A 32MP front-facing camera then takes care of selfie duties.
The 6.78in screen – which naturally uses AMOLED panel tech for epic contrast and vivid colours – has a 1.5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Its party trick is a massive 5000 nits peak brightness, which should mean outdoor visibility is never an issue. The accompanying Dolby Atmos-approved stereo speakers then have a 300% volume boost setting for when it’s time to get the party started.
It inherits the slender frame and sleek looks from Motorola’s pricier Edge series, including a textured finish (don’t call it faux leather) on the rear panel that’s been treated to a choice of on-trend colours courtesy of Pantone: Shaded Spruce or Black Olive.
The firm also promises a reassuring level of toughness, with IP64 water and dust resistance, plus Gorilla Glass 7i protecting the display. The Moto G77 has been put through the MIL-STD-810H gauntlet as well, so extreme temperatures and humidity shouldn’t cause disaster, and drop protection is twice that of the outgoing G75.
Power comes from a MediaTek Dimensity 6400, partnered with either 8 or 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of on-board storage. It’s very much a mid-range chip, so should deliver respectable performance as well as good efficiency. That means the 5200mAh battery will likely make it through your day without any fuss, and it’ll recharge at a decent 30W over USB-C.
The Moto G77 is on sale right now, for £250/$319. As ever, Motorola’s European offerings are totally different to what it sells in the USA.
The step-down Moto G67 has similar styling, equal endurance and a matching 6.78in AMOLED screen that can shine just as brightly as its bigger brother, but it packs fewer pixels into its rear camera sensor. It’s rocking a 50MP Sony-supplied LYTIA 600 main snapper along with an 8MP ultrawide, and a 32MP selfie cam up front.
Another mid-tier MediaTek chipset makes an appearance here. The Dimensity 6300 is paired with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. A microSD card slot lets you add more capacity later if you’re running low. The 5200mAh battery is unchanged, and it still tops up at 30W over USB-C.
You’ll be able to snap one up in Arctic Seal or Nile colours for £200/€219.
If your purse strings are even tighter, the Moto G17 could be worth a look – though you do sacrifice screen tech. The £150/€189 handset, which arrives in Evening Blue, Alaskan Blue and Bordeaux colours, gets a 6.72in LCD panel rather than the OLEDs found further up the totem pole. It still has a Full HD+ resolution and can push 1000 nits of peak brightness.
There’s also the G17 Power, which adds a much bigger battery, but boosts the price to €279. It’s not heading to the UK.
