“It’s always the same thing at Marvel!” Since the saga hit the shelves of Disney+, the recurrence of releases seems to have caused a feeling of weariness among spectators. Add to this a difficulty for these projects to move in the right direction, and you obtain a phase 5 that looks like an industrial disaster on all aspects. With Phase 6, and a new strategy for the resurrected Marvel Television division, the MCU could really deliver on its good run. Wonder Man is unlike anything Marvel has ever offered… and that’s exactly why you shouldn’t miss it.
Since the firm made the informed decision to free itself from connectivity at all costs, and recruited Brad Winderbaum to head Marvel Television, it is less a question of offering filler series than of exploring new formats and themes. As WandaVision was a risk-taking, Wonder Man takes over a genre hitherto little exploited by superheroes: parody and meta comedy. Marvel finally seems to be embarking on the path of self-parody, opening its sequence on the very real public weariness before unraveling the thread of an astonishing plot.

A rising star?
Actor, stuntman and… masked vigilante. Wonder Man is a unique personality within the stable. The trailer released today tells us more about this double life that young Simon Williams is about to lead. In this series, a filmmaker named Von Kovak is preparing to make a reboot of an old masterpiece of his: a superhero film called Wonder Man. So it doesn’t take long for us to understand where the teaser is trying to take us: when the question of casting the superhero for this reboot comes, the trailer leaves us with a shot of Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Because after all, who better than a young actor and stuntman freshly transformed into a real vigilante to become the new face of Wonder Man on screen?
This series is therefore intended to be an atypical project, where the making of a superhero film within the MCU also marks the first steps of a true defender of humanity. Viewers will be able to follow Simon William as he divides his time between filming and fighting crime in Los Angeles. A bit of a loser, the character founded the West Coast Avengers in the comics. Less famous than their New York counterparts, will these vigilantes appear in the MCU to compete with the New Avengers? Nothing is certain yet, since the program will be broadcast under the Marvel Spotlight banner, supposed to bring together the projects “street heroes” such asEcho. Not sure that introducing a new genre of Avengers responds to this new range of Marvel programs.
A solid distribution
After a stint at DC, in Aquaman et Aquaman 2Yahya Abdul-Mateen II enters the MCU. He will opposite Ben Kingsley who has played Trevor Slatterry since Iron Man 3. As a reminder, it was he who played the role of the Mandarin on behalf of Aldrich Killian. Moreover, we will be careful not to mention the rest of the cast to preserve the surprise regarding the superheroes summoned for what promises to be a unique project. Disney+ meets its subscribers from next January.
