Until recently, GPT-4.1 was a model reserved exclusively for developers. You could only access it through OpenAi’s API, which left it out of the reach of the usual chatgpt users. But that has begun to change.
GPT-4.1 is already reaching chatgpt. Openai has begun to activate this model in its Chatbot service for those who are signed to the payment plans: Chatgpt Plus, Pro and Team. In the case of Enterprise and Edu accounts, the availability will come “in the coming weeks.”
And free users? At the moment, they still do not access the full version of the model. In return, Openai is deploying GPT-4.1 Mini: a lighter variant, with fewer capacities, but that improves GPT-4o Mini and promises to be sufficient for many daily tasks.
The list of models is also updated. With this change, GPT-4o Mini disappears from the Chatgpt model selector. Its place is occupied by GPT-4.1 Mini, which becomes the new starting point for most users, including free.
More performance, more context and lower cost (at least in the API). One of the most prominent improvements of GPT-4.1 is in its context window: it can process up to one million tokens, a figure that multiplies by eight the length of contexts such as the complete source code of React. At the moment, that capacity is available only via API, and it is not clear if it will remain in the integrated version in Chatgpt.
A more capable model of doing many things. Benchmarks published by OpenAI point to generalized improvements. In instructions monitoring tasks, GPT-4.1 achieves 38.3 % in Multichallenge, 10.5 points more than GPT-4O.
In understanding of long contexts, it reaches 72.0 % in the category “Without subtitles” of Video-Mme, surpassing its predecessor in 6.7 points. And in programming, where the company has placed a special focus, it gets 54.6 % in Swe-Bench Verified, clearly surpassing GPT-4O and also to GPT-4.5.
A real alternative to O3? Although GPT-4.1 is not a reasoning model as such, Openai ensures that it can perform the same or better than O3 in development tasks. The company seeks to unify the best of both worlds: the versatility of general models and the precision of the models designed to reason.
