Last December 17, Pokémon TCG Pocket welcomed new boosters for the greatest pleasure of players and collectors. The Fabulous Island mini set lives up to its name and has not failed to bring ever more interesting cards and mechanics. For over a week now, trainers have been experimenting with new combinations to try to find the most powerful decks. A few cards and certain builds were quick to stand out, but now a new juggernaut is sowing terror in online matches. Magikarp was able to climb the meta cascade to establish itself at the top as Gyarados.
One Pokémon, different ways to play
Are you looking for a powerful, versatile, modular and fun deck to boot? You are in the right place. The new Gyarados card has so many advantages and so few flaws that it is now capable of dealing with most archetypes. Although it is only a level 1 Pokémon, evolving from Magikarp, Gyarados ex has 180 health pointswhich is just as much PV as the famous Charizard ex which is the delight of fire type decks. Add to that an even more consistent and disruptive attack for a devastating set. For 3 water energies and one colorless energy, Gyarados ex inflicts 140 damage, but it is above all the special effect of this attack which wreaks havoc.
This attack forces each player to discard a random energy from their Pokémon. Once launched, Gyarados ex is therefore capable of slowing down the opponent each turn. Enough to face the most powerful decks which are also the most voracious in energy. Even though the effect also affects us as the attacker, Gyarados decks offer different ways to negate this backlash. Ondine, Aquali or even Drakkarmin: there is no shortage of options to strengthen Gyarados. Here are examples of decklists that you can modify according to your wishes.
The most aggressive formula is undoubtedly the combo with Amphinobi. While the opponent suffers the wrath of Gyarados ex, Amphinobi is able to hit for 20 damage from the bench. In this deck, Drakkarmin only acts as a tank: so remember to deactivate fire energies. His Hard Skin talent allows you to inflict 20 damage for each attack suffered on the active position. You must therefore take advantage of this barrier to damage the enemy’s HP and charge Gyarados ex with energy. But since this deck is based on evolutions, a bad draw can quickly cause delays which will be fatal.
The Leviator ex / Staross ex combo offers more response and limits the delay that the Grenousse evolutionary family can cause. No Drakkarmin in this list: the objective is to manage the placement of water energies thanks to the talent of the new Aquali. The Gyarados ex card is so versatile that it can still be combined with the water Pokémon of your choice. Ondine remains an essential card, but you are free to try other combinations of Items, Supporters and Pokémon.
