Nothing less than 100% on Rotten Tomatoes has this extraordinary science fiction series that, with its absolutely unique aesthetics and plot, distances itself from most productions of the genre on the platform. An indisputable reason for this may be its origin: ‘Better than Us’ It has Russian nationality, since the series was originally produced for the state channel C1R, although it was soon acquired by Netflix for international distribution and to form part of its stable of originals.
The series takes place in the future, in the year 2029, in which Androids have become full members of society. They do a multitude of tasks in which they are confused with humans: personal assistants, security guards, office workers… In this context we meet Arisa, designed to be the perfect companion, but who is being persecuted for having killed a man who He intended to abuse her.
He takes refuge with a family of humans, but when he gets to know his new family in depth, the android begins to develop self-awareness, emotions and learning. And at the same time, all this is told in the context of an android rebellion against humans, committing a series of very measured murders, with a series of subplots where CRONOS, the company that manufactures the robots, is also involved.
Mixing elements of family drama and corporate thriller, ‘Better than Us’ draws on classic stories of rebellion by artificial intelligence, such as the film ‘I, Robot’, but with a more crude and melodramatic touch. Among the aspects that distinguish it are a very particular vision of the future (there are clearly very sophisticated elements, while in others, the technology barely seems to have evolved) and a conception of robotics that is also between retro and visionaryas demonstrated by the very peculiar aesthetics (based on Russian dolls from decades ago) of the androids.
