Right now, LEGO is playing on the nostalgic side more than ever. Shortly before the Goonies set which smells of the 80s, the Danish company released the LEGO Game Boy set. It perfectly captures the spirit of the console that rocked our childhood. But once the last LEGO is clipped, all that remains is to place the set on a shelf.

The Substance Labs team, based in Zug, Switzerland, decided to develop a solution to bring the LEGO Game Boy set to life by allowing you to play the greatest classics of the Nintendo console. Their creation, called BrickBoy, transforms the LEGO set into a functional console. The concept can be summed up in a few words: an electronic kit that is installed in the LEGO construction to make it playable. Screen, speaker, responsive buttons, everything is there. And the most beautiful thing in the story? No technical skills are required.

Assembly as simple as a LEGO set

The creators wanted the installation to remain true to the LEGO experience. No soldering iron, no lines of code to type, no incomprehensible manual. We open the box, we follow the step by step guide, in less than ten minutes, the console comes to life. The components fit into the existing LEGO structure without distorting it. The aesthetic remains intact, but this time the screen actually lights up.

The kit consists of a custom cartridge, display module, control board and button system. All these elements were designed and assembled by the Swiss team. They do not resell any LEGO or Nintendo parts, which allows them to remain legal while offering a completely independent product. Once the installation is complete, just press the power button and the magic will happen.

Three versions for all profiles

BrickBoy comes in three kits adapted to different needs and budgets. The Essential Kit represents the affordable entry point. It offers the basic functions for playing classics on Game Boy without any frills. Perfect for those who simply want to relive their childhood memories without breaking the bank.

The Gamer kit goes up a notch with more advanced options. It features accelerated gaming mode for the impatient, customizable backlighting, Bluetooth audio, and even wireless updates. Enthusiasts will find what they are looking for with this version which offers a more modern experience.

The Collector’s Edition pushes the slider even further with its always on mode. This feature keeps the screen permanently lit thanks to a dedicated power supply, transforming the console into a true illuminated collector’s item.

The project arrives on Kickstarter at a time when many are eyeing the LEGO Game Boy set as a Christmas present. If the campaign achieves its objectives, the first kits will go to contributors in December 2025.
