There are plenty of smart home kit to ramp up your home security, and smart locks are ideal for making sure your home’s main entry point is safe and sound. Usually, they rely on an app, key fob, PIN number, or automations to unlock. But SwitchBot might have released one of the most convenient and safest options I’ve tried.

SwitchBot’s Lock Vision is the world’s first deadbolt with proper 3D structured-light facial recognition. I’m talking over 20000 infrared dots beamed at your mug to map it in gloriously detailed 3D. Hat or glasses? No problem. Woke up looking like a raccoon with a hangover? It’ll still recognise you. And no, you can’t trick it with a photo or video – it’s got liveness detection.

The Pro version goes even further into biometric wonderland with palm-vein recognition. Yes, really. Because apparently reading your vascular system is the next logical step in home security. Wet hands or dirty mitts? Doesn’t matter. The near-infrared tech sees straight through to your inner plumbing.

Installation should be a doddle too, with just one screwdriver needed. SwitchBot told me it fits most deadbolts, so if you’ve got a door, chances are this thing can attach to it. Under the hood, both versions come with a DualPower setup (one rechargeable battery and one long-life backup) and a backup battery for emergencies (or in case you forget to charge it). There’s also a USB-C port for a desperate juice-up at the door.

You get Matter-over-Wi-Fi support, meaning this plays nice with Apple Home without needing a separate hub, and there are 19 unlocking options if scanning your face ever feels too mainstream. NFC, passcodes, geofencing, and the SwitchBot app. It’s IP65 water- and dust-resistant, so it’ll survive any weather you can throw at it.

The Lock Vision and Lock Vision Pro will be available to order soon through SwitchBot’s website. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but will likely fall between the $100 and $200 mark.
