Has HBO Max heard viewers’ complaints? If House of the Dragon has many followers around the world, the series derived from Game of Thrones also struggles to convince early fans with its similarity to its predecessor.
Under the leadership of Rian Condal, the same political intrigues are played out, minus the scale of the adventures of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister. GOT’s little sister focuses on Dragonstone and King’s Landing, telling a story whose outcome is already known to the most loyal viewers. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises to break with the established rules of the franchise according to the creator, right from the credits.
The series which will follow the knight Dunk, 72 years after the events of House of the Dragon. The Targaryen line is still on the Iron Throne. He will travel across Westeros with his friend Egg, a squire… who hides a dark secret.
Forget the model
During an interview with Entertainment Weeklycreator Ira Parker confided that the traditional model and credits of Game of Thrones, also used for House of the Dragon, would not be on the program for this new series. Instead, viewers will have to make do with a card with the title of the series and “medieval typography”.
Ramin Djawadi’s music will not resonate at the opening. The screenwriter explains: “The theme songs for the original series and House of the Dragon are grand, epic and incredible. That’s not really Dunk’s modus operandi. It’s simple and straightforward. It doesn’t need any flashiness.”
He adds that this decision was difficult to make but necessary to contrast with the previous series adapted from the imagination of George RR Martin. “It was not a decision taken lightly, but it serves our series.”
Forget the nobility
Fantasy has a nasty flaw. At the house of Game of Thrones particularly, only the fate of the nobility seems to have enough importance to be told. Like many epics of the genre, George RR Martin’s novels focus on the political intrigues of Westeros and barely touch on the lives of the people. With A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsthere will be no question of focusing on the Targaryens and their court. Quite the contrary.
It will involve following the two characters as they explore Westeros, far from the palaces. This will be a way of questioning the people’s response to royal decisions. The creator also raises a question that none of the previous series asked, at least in detail. “Fifty years after the disappearance of the dragons, people are beginning to wonder why they still leave the Targaryens in power.”
Forget the magic
Finally, as the synopsis specifies, dragons have disappeared from the face of the earth when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Magic, which was at the epicenter of the intrigues of House of the Dragon et Game of Thrones, will therefore not be mentioned. A way of redistributing the cards in a mythology still obsessed with the song of ice and fire.
No prophecy, no white walkers and above all no prince who was promised, an epic and medieval adventure, by freeing itself from the fantasy part of the stories of Westeros, is HBO Max having its most accomplished series?
