APPLE is expected to put the final nail in the coffin of at least three popular gadgets in 2025.
And one popular iPhone model looks set to be at risk.
All smartphone makers routinely end support and servicing for products after so many years.
But Apple has a pretty structured set of rules that allow us to predict which devices are likely to make it onto the kill list next.
The firm has two end stages, vintage then obsolete.
Products enter the vintage category when Apple stopped selling them for more than five and less than seven years ago.
This period can be considered as devices basically on their way out, with Apple still providing service and parts for repairs where available.
But after this, products become obsolete.
Apple’s definition of obsolete is when it “stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago”.
Once it reaches this stage, parts are no longer made available at all.
For example, if you need a new battery – which is highly likely after such a long period of time – there won’t be any for your iPhone.
Separately, it’s important to note that Apple provides at least five years of security software updates for iPhones – though the firm has been known to drop important updates much later than this.
Thanks to Apple’s clear and transparent obsolete policy, we can work out the devices that are likely to face the chop next year.
And on the iPhone front, it looks like the iPhone X will go.
The iPhone X was a much-loved refresh for the range, as the first to introduce the notch at the top of the screen.
It was released back in 2017 and discontinued a year later following the introduction of the iPhone 11.
Given that 2025 will mark seven years since the iPhone X was discontinued, we can assume it will fall into the obsolete bucket very soon.
But of course, Apple do much more than iPhones and the same obsolete rules apply for much of the company’s other devices.
This means 2025 also looks set to be farewell for two iPad models too.
These are the iPad (5th generation) and iPad Air 2, which were both discontinued in 2018.
Of course, nothing is set in stone until Apple says so.
