Forget Google Chrome or Safari: OpenAI now has its own web browser. ChatGPT Atlas looks like a classic browser (based on Chromium like the majority of them), except that it embeds ChatGPT directly in its main window. You can ask a question, obtain an article summary or even ask them to act: book a flight, write an email, correct a text. In short, AI-assisted navigation.

A navigation companion who remembers everything (or almost)

The “agent” mode allows ChatGPT to take actions on behalf of the Internet user: “ In Atlas, ChatGPT can now act for you » explains Adam Fry, product manager. The assistant can arrange an outing, fill out a form, or clean tabs without having to lift a finger. But be careful: this autonomy comes at a Price. Only paid subscribers (Plus and Pro) can activate agent mode at this time. And OpenAI warns: even with safeguards, the AI can make mistakes or get trapped by instructions hidden in a page. Caution is therefore necessary.

ChatGPT Atlas does not just answer questions: it also remembers the Internet user’s little habits. Thanks to its memory, the browser can remember the pages visited or the topics explored. It is then possible to ask him to, for example, find job offers consulted last week or to continue a search left unresolved.

This memory is optional. The user can delete everything, open “incognito” windows, or even block ChatGPT access to certain sites. Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, promises “ a smooth and pleasant experience », while emphasizing the transparency and control left to the user. To avoid mental overheating, Atlas adopts a “companion” mode: when you click on a link, the browser displays the page on the left and the discussion with ChatGPT on the right. The assistant can summarize an article, rephrase a sentence or suggest the next step in a search without leaving the website.

OpenAI is therefore entering an already highly coveted arena: that of AI-powered browsers. Perplexity released its Comet this summer, Google is preparing a Chrome stuffed with Gemini… and the creator of ChatGPT responds with Atlas, his vision of a web where everything involves chatting with a bot. If only the macOS version is available to all users, Windows, iOS and Android versions are in preparation.

For Mac owners, ChatGPT Atlas is available for download here.
