The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published new Consumer Protections Regulations 2024, specifically 12th amendment. With this move, TRAI is going to introduce multiple consumer-friendly changes including one of the most necessary requirements, plans with only voice call and SMS benefits.
Speculations are that this move by TRAI is going to help 150 million 2G users and will be beneficial for all those as well who carry two SIM cards. Most of the users these days carry two SIM cards out of which one is for internet and the other one is for calling. The latest TRAI mandate will help people only pay for the services they are using instead of paying for a bundle that has unnecessary or unwanted services.
Talking about the current scenario, all the 2G users or the ones who are two SIM cards are supposed to buy not so cheap plans that include data benefits that literally do no good. This new mandate is going to have a major impact on telecom giants like Airtel and Vi who still offer 2G networking. Jio only offers 4G and 5G networking in the market.
And amidst all the loses that the telco giants have faced in the India market in the last few months, they are looking to increase their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) with the help of bundled plans. As claimed by TRAI, the new regulations have been introduced after careful consideration of multiple consumer surveys and stakeholder feedback.
Apart from that, TRAI has also asked the telcos to introduce top-up vouchers that should start from a minimum of Rs 10. That’s not it, as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has also asked the operators to increase the validity of Special Tariff Vouchers (STV) from 90 days to 365 days for the users. For those who are unaware, STV plans carry different benefits and are cheaper than regular plans.
