President-elect Donald Trump has requested the US Supreme Court pause the enforcement of a federal order requiring TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to divest from the platform or face a US ban, according to a Bloomberg report last Friday. In a filing submitted Friday, Trump argued for more time to resolve the matter politically after his inauguration on Jan. 20. He described the case as presenting “an unprecedented, novel, and difficult tension between free-speech rights on one side, and foreign policy and national-security concerns on the other.”

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Jan. 10, aiming to issue a decision before the law takes effect on Jan. 19. The legislation mandates ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US-approved buyer or cease operations in the country. [Bloomberg]
