President Trump spoke on the phone with tech billionaire Elon Musk late Monday night, according to multiple reports, as allies of both men had urged them to reconcile their feud that exploded last week with a torrent of social media barbs.

The New York Times first reported on the call. The White House did not respond to requests for comment about the conversation

Musk and Trump had a very public falling out last week after the Tesla CEO had departed his role as a special government employee and chief adviser to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The billionaire, who owns six companies, had also criticized the massive reconciliation package working its way through Congress as an “abomination.” Trump said he was “very disappointed” in Musk, who responded with a wave of attacks on social media that included echoing a call for Trump to be impeached and an allegation that the president was named in documents connected to a federal investigation of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder, who spent millions of dollars in support of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, had deleted his more inflammatory posts in recent days. Early Wednesday, he posted on X, which he also owns, that some of his attacks “went too far.”

“The president acknowledged the statement that Elon put out this morning, and he is appreciative of it, and we are continuing to focus on the business of the American people,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at a briefing Wednesday afternoon.

Leavitt said she was not aware of any efforts underway to review government contracts with Musk’s businesses, something Trump had floated last week.
