iPhone 17 Pro has proven a huge hit with users, whereas the iPhone Air—despite strong reviews from owners—has reportedly sold poorly. But rumors indicate two iPhone 17 Pro features could be added to the iPhone Air 2, which might help the next-generation product prove more successful.

#1: Vapor chamber for cooling, improved performance

On the surface, putting a vapor chamber to the iPhone 17 Pro may not seem all that exciting. But the latest Pro feature has been a welcome addition after iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro both struggled with overheating.

Now, per a report from The Information in November, Apple plans to bring a vapor chamber to the iPhone Air 2 as well.

Here’s how Apple describes the iPhone 17 Pro vapor chamber’s benefits:

The new internal architecture features an Apple-designed vapor chamber to enhance heat dissipation and performance. Deionized water is sealed inside the vapor chamber, which is laser-welded into the aluminum chassis to move heat away from the powerful A19 Pro, allowing it to operate at even higher performance levels. The heat is carried into the forged aluminum unibody, where it is distributed evenly through the system, managing power and surface temperatures to deliver incredible performance while remaining comfortable to hold.

In other words, the vapor chamber helps the iPhone achieve a higher sustained performance level while staying cool to the touch.

This isn’t just about how it feels: the vapor chamber also prevents major slowdowns that could be a problem when gaming or capturing photos—something I’ve encountered recently on my iPhone Air.

#2: A mystery second rear-facing camera

iPhone Air 2 is also expected to gain one of the additional rear-facing cameras found on iPhone 17 Pro.

Several reputable sources have supported the idea of Apple adding a second rear camera to its next iPhone Air.

What none of those sources seem to know, however, is exactly which camera will be added.

iPhone 17 has a two-camera setup, and its second lens is the Ultra Wide. So giving the Ultra Wide to iPhone Air 2 seems the most likely outcome.

However, it’s also possible Apple could opt to add the Telephoto lens instead.

The Telephoto camera has long been associated with ‘Pro’ iPhones, and Apple billed the original iPhone Air as having “the power of Pro.” So perhaps that’s the planned direction for iPhone Air 2.

In any case, as a big fan of the current iPhone Air, I hope adding a second rear camera makes the product a lot more popular with prospective upgraders—it deserves a bright future.

What other new features do you hope to see in an iPhone Air 2? Let us know in the comments.
