Ubuntu 25.04 beta is set to be released today and thus this week I’ve begun testing out the latest Ubuntu 25.04 builds on different systems for seeing how this six-month Ubuntu Linux update is looking compared to the prior Ubuntu 24.10 release. In this first Ubuntu 25.04 beta benchmarking article is a look at the performance using an AMD Ryzen 9000 series desktop and Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics.
Ubuntu 25.04 beta is coming ahead of next month’s official release. Ubuntu 25.04 beta is quite exciting with shipping the very-new Linux 6.14 kernel and the recently-minted GNOME 48 desktop. There is also the Mesa 25.0 graphics drivers for the newest open-source OpenGL and Vulkan drivers. Plus Python 3.13 and other software updates over Ubuntu 24.10. There still is GCC 14.2 as the default system compiler like Ubuntu 24.10.
For getting an idea of the Ubuntu 25.04 beta performance, for this initial Ubuntu 24.10 vs. Ubuntu 25.04 beta benchmarking was done on an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D Zen 5 desktop at stock speeds and Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics. No changes were made to the hardware between installs but simply carrying out fresh installations of Ubuntu 24.10 and Ubuntu 25.04 beta this week for seeing how the performance is shifting.
Ubuntu 25.04 beta benchmarks on server hardware and server/HPC workloads along with other Ubuntu 25.04 hardware performance benchmarks will come in additional articles on Phoronix over the coming weeks. Ubuntu 25.04 isn’t a Long Term Support (LTS) release but nevertheless interesting to look at the evolution of Ubuntu performance especially with being the half-way point until Ubuntu 26.04 LTS next spring. Ubuntu 25.04 is working its way toward its official release on 17 April.
