Canonical announced today they have released Ubuntu developer images for the Orange Pi RV2, a new RISC-V single board computer that is low-cost with the SBC featuring 8GB of RAM costing just $64 USD.

The Orange Pi RV2 is the newest RISC-V board ported by Canonical to run on Ubuntu Linux. The Orange Pi RV2 uses a KY-X1 octa-core SoC that does support RISC-V’s vector and RVA22 extensions. Plus there is an AI accelerator albeit rated for just 2 TOPS.

This 8-core RISC-V SBC comes with either 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of LPDDR4X memory. There are also two M.2 M-key slots on the board, WiFi and Bluetooth, and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. There is an HDMI output for those wanting to drive a display.

More details on Ubuntu Linux for the Orange Pi RV2 via the Canonical.com announcement. Details on this low-cost RISC-V single board computer itself via OrangePi.org.

With the top-end 8GB model retailing for just about $64 USD, its price is quite appealing compared to many other RISC-V boards. At that low of a price for an octa-core RISC-V SoC and 8GB of RAM, I decided to order one from Amazon.com (affliate link). I got it for $64 USD and should arrive in a week or two. So stay tuned for Orange Pi RV2 benchmarks on Phoronix against other RISC-V and ARM SBCs later in the month. It will be interesting to see how well this board works and its level of performance compared to the likes of the Raspberry Pi SBCs.
