We are live!
Hello, ladies and gents and welcome to SunSport’s live coverage of UFC 309: Jones vs Miocic.
The card, of course, will be headlined by Jon Jones’ maiden defence of the heavyweight title against former champion Stipe Miocic.
And in the co-main event of the evening, Michael Chandler will return from a two-year lay-off to take on fan favourite Charles Oliveira.
SunSport is live on the scene at Madison Square Garden. So keep it locked right here for all the latest from ‘The World’s Most Famous’ Arena.
Stipe got stopped in his tracks
Miocic has had a long time to ponder on his last fight as it came more than three years ago.
The American got dealt with by UFC legend Francis Ngannou – suffering a stunning second-round KO.
But he’ll be hoping for a different outcome tonight against Jones.
Jones’ retirement plan
When asked if he could call it a day after beating Miocic, Jones said: “You know I feel like I’ve been debating on whether I’m going to retire or not.
“I really don’t know if I’m going to retire or not. I feel like I’m basing a lot of whether I retire or not on my performance.”
Miocic said of potential retirement: “I think every fight, I’m always preparing for my last one.
“I always thought about retiring after my first UFC fight.
“I say that all the time. Who wants to get beat up for 10 weeks, 12 weeks, come back and do it again?
“I say that all the time. Who wants to get beat up for 10 weeks, 12 weeks, come back and do it again?
“I love what I do and it’s fun. So we’ll see but right now my task at hand is Jon. That’s all I care about. That’s what I’m thinking about.”
Bones is back
Jon Jones became a two-division champion in the main event of UFC 285 with a stunning first-round submission of Cyril Gane in his last fight.
Conor McGregor watched on from the front row as he looked to build bridges among the UFC fraternity.
The win has stretched Jones’ record to 27-1 and solidified his status as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time.
