VIRGIN Media customers are being offered a free upgrade for their broadband kit that will not only boost speeds but also protect them from hackers.

The firm has started reaching out to households still using its older Wi-Fi routers, dishing out a newer one “at no extra cost” instead.

A number of older models still work but are no longer receiving important security updates.

These are needed to ensure your home’s network and devices are as safe as possible from bank-raiding cyber criminals.

Older hubs are also lacking the latest technology that help provide a smoother, faster Wi-Fi connection across your home.

Part of the reason Virgin Media are reaching out to people is because of a change to the law.

Owners of the following hubs are being approached with an upgrade:

Instead, they are being offered the Hub 4.

“We’re aware you’ve got one of our oldest Hubs, either a Hub 1, Hub 2 or a Hub 2 AC,” a letter sent to customers reads, as seen by ISPreview.

“Although they still work, they no longer receive security updates.

“The UK Government has updated the law about telecommunications networks and keeping you safe online, and we need to offer you a free Hub replacement.

Is Someone Stealing Your Wi-Fi? How to Find Out and Stop Them

“The good news is, our Hub 4 is more secure, faster and offers improved power consumption.

“And it works brilliantly with the Virgin Media Connect app, so you can easily manage your WiFi network.

Pesky appliances that interfere with your Wi-Fi

Avoid placing your router near these as they can disrupt the Wi-Fi signal:

  • Speakers
  • TV
  • Microwave
  • Oven
  • Christmas lights
  • Refrigerator
  • Dishwasher
  • Washing machine
  • Cordless phone
  • Kettle
  • Toaster
  • Water pipes
  • Other people’s WiFi routers

“Plus, the self-optimising Intelligent WiFi regularly checks your signal, then picks the least busy connection – giving you fast and reliable WiFi.”

So look out for a letter arriving to your address soon if you have one of the older routers.

Wi-Fi booster tips from Virgin Media

Gareth Lister, Virgin Media’s connectivity expert, has previously revealed some pro tips for Wi-Fi boosters to The Sun.

Some customers can claim a free Wi-Fi booster – find out how here.

“Similar to a mobile phone or a hub, avoid putting your pod in direct sunlight,” says Lister.

This means avoiding window sills, especially during the warmer months.

Leaving any bit of tech in the sun puts it at risk of overheating.

But its particularly bad for Wi-Fi routers and boosters because they are always switched on.

You should also deter any pets – namely cats – who fancy using the booster as a cosy seat.

Overheating can slow down the efficiency of the device, reduce the speed of Wi-Fi and in the worst cases, stop extending your connection altogether.
